Polar Bear Plunge

Every year on New Year’s Day, the Town of Williamsport hosts a Polar Bear Plunge to benefit local charities. The tradition in Williamsport dates back 20 years, when Todd Bowman of Bowman Corporation and several of his friends began this New Year’s Day tradition just for fun!

The Polar Bear Plunge is not for the faint of heart. Some years, the local fire company has to use sledge hammers to break away ice in the river, but it sure is a great event. Plunging into the icy waters of the Potomac River for a few minutes, and not only do you get bragging rights among your friends, but you are also helping support local non-profit organizations.

Every year, the Polar Bear Plunge in Williamsport draws a large crowd. There are family fun events that accompany the plunge including a big bon-fire to keep warm, Cornhole tournament, a gaming tent, music, and more!
